One surprisingly simple technique to relieve anxiety

One surprisingly simple technique to relieve anxiety

When you notice those anxious feelings looming, do you wish there was something you could do that would help you to ease that anxiety?

Anxiety can feel as though it arrives all at once. Your thoughts speed up, your body becomes tense and it can be difficult to focus on anything except what might go wrong. The good news is that you can practise a simple technique that helps bring your attention back to the present.

Start by noticing your breath

You do not need to force your breathing to be perfect. Simply pause and notice it. Feel the air moving in through your nose and out again. Let your shoulders soften as you breathe out.

Try breathing in gently for a count of four, then breathing out for a count of six. A slightly longer exhale can signal to your body that it is safe to settle.

Use your senses to ground yourself

Look around and name five things you can see. Then notice four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.

This is not about making anxiety disappear instantly. It is about giving your mind a different place to rest. Each time you return to what is real and present, you create a little more distance from the anxious story in your head.

Speak to yourself with kindness

Anxious thoughts often sound urgent and convincing. Instead of arguing with them, try saying: “I notice that I am feeling anxious right now. I can take this one moment at a time.”

A compassionate response helps you move away from self-criticism and towards calm, practical action.

Practise before you need it

Like any skill, grounding becomes easier with repetition. Try it when you are reasonably calm so that it feels familiar when anxiety appears.

If anxiety is regularly affecting your sleep, confidence, relationships or ability to enjoy life, personalised support can help you understand the patterns behind it and find a way forward.
